I'm sure most of us here have tried searching a roll of wheat cents or two at one point. Lots of sellers are available on ebay that continually sell mixed (unsearched wheat cents). I search wheat cents all the time.

Don't forget to pay extra attention to the 1955 to see if you might get one of the double dies!!

I always check!!!

But havent found one yet.

If you want i could start a list of things to look for? I dont know... What do you think?

Thanks for looking!

Nice totals!

BTW, I've got some 1955's, and I can't see the VDB on them anywhere. Where do you find them, and are the non-VDB's worth much?

i've found 3 steals, one an error with filled 4

nothing else interesting

THANKS FOR THE REPLIES!

Cool finds!

BTW: There are only the VDB letters on the 1909 cents. And only on some of them. Its on the reverse very bottom.

Very small.

HH!

THANKS!!!

What have you found with him so far?

I hope I get a good batch. Because after "testing" out the cents I might order a lot more.

I just got 1,000 wheaties from REBCORP on ebay and got all crap!!!
Only 5 out of the 1,000 coins were older than 1940, 2 in the 20's and 3 in the 30's ???

I think VDB is on all lincon cents after 1918 (I think). Its on the obverse at about 7 oclock. Right on the lip of the shoulder at the bottom. I think the letters go into the metal. I first looked at some wheaties and could not find it. And thats with a magnifying glass. So I looked at a fairly new penny
then I saw it and new where to look. I went back to the wheaties and in most cases could barely make out something, even with the magnifying glass. But it is there. Im not kidding,it is SMALL.

Searcher.

i buy rolls of wheat cents at the flea market alot. there is a dealer that i go to and he has rolls of them for $2.50 each. i usually just find common dates, but i have found a few from the 20's and 30's. i have also found a 1912. i love going through his rolls. you never know what your going to find. the rolls are supposably unsearched, but i'm not sure. i always ask people, if it unsearched, how do they know they are all wheaties? i have wondered this.

Re: Searching Wheat cent rolls!!!! Post your finds! Experiences! Seller ratin

I guess I'm too cheap to buy them after getting burned a couple of times on supposedly unsearched rolls. Most of those ads say "Unsearched by Us". Doesn't mean someone hasn't looked through them. Occasionally truly unsearched wheats appear occasionally on Ebay, but they are rare. According to this thread and other Muchocoins may be one of those.

I am fortunate in that my bank has a coin counter and they have agreed to sell me all of the bags of cents from 2 branches. In the past 2.5 years I have pulled over 10,000 wheaties from circulation including many prior to 1940. I have put together an album for the best ones. All I'm missing are

1909 VDB, 1909SVDB, 1914D, 1922 (Plain), 1922D, 1931-S and 1933-D.

I separate them out as follows:
1940-1958 P&D Mints
1940-1958 S Mints
Teens/Twenties/Thirties by Mint.
I pull everything in the Pre-1940 group that grades better than Good.

My local dealer gives me .02 for the P&D, .03 for the S, .05 for the early low grade ones, and market price for the better dates.

What he does with them I do not know, but if you wind up with some of mine, they have definitely been searched ;D

You're right, tw655. Brenner's initials are on the obverse. They are VERY tiny. ...on another note, I've been short of cash the past couple of days, so the CRHing has been on hold, and it's killing me. I hope to resume this weekend, and will post my findings after I have a nice haul. Maybe it's just withdrawal, but I've been spending way too much time thinking about silver halves. May have to settle for pennies or a few rolls of nickels to hold me over. :-[ Regarding this thread, you can never go wrong with searching through a coin dealer's junk bin, but that takes a lot of the fun out of it. Finding coins in the wild is far more thrilling. Last month I found a steel penny in a gas station's take a penny leave a penny dish. I once found a gold/brass colored penny from the 1980's (forget the exact date). I saved it for a while, but spent it recently, because I figured it was nothing. Was it something? Should I regret having spent it? I recently heard something about a few pennies from the 80's being made of brass---or at least I think it was brass. Anyone else heard this? I've also heard that the Ryedale sorter has found the occasional 1983 penny made of copper, not zinc. Are any of these rumors true, or am I just perpetuating coin gossip? Anyway, thinking back to my cashier days, it's amazing what you can find in penny rolls. Not just wheats, but just about everything on the planet that'll fit in a penny roll. Buttons, tokens, you name it. One of the most interesting things I found was a hallowed-out post-81 penny. Some one poked a hole in it, and chemically dissolved the zinc core leaving just a crushed, copper shell. It weighed next to nothing.

Never bought any unsearched rolls. I always assumed they were scams (why would someone in possession of unsearched rolls deny him or herself the pleasure of searching?), but reading your posts has made me reconsider. :) HH!

WOW! Thanks for the posts everyone!

I like hearing all of the finds, thats incredible!

I updated the store list too.

I sorted a box of 2500 lincoln cents yesterday. Zn in one pile. Cu in the other pile.

My totals were:

2500 cents
1767 Zn
721 Cu
9 wheats 1920, 1935, 1936, 1944 x2, 1952 D x2, 1955, 1956
2 Canadian cents post 1996
1 Roosevelt 1965 dime

I have been sorting and saving all my cents for a little over a year now. I usually do about two boxes a week.
