The Great State of Louisiana
Detector(s) used
P.O.S.
Hi everyone. I'm new here and this is my first post.

I currently live on land that has been in my family since 1854. There is about 40 acres total divided between me, my sister, my father, and my uncle. The oldest structure still standing is the farmhouse my great-grandfather built in 1915. I am interested in taking a metal detector around the property, hitting a few potential hotspots first - mainly the farmhouse and where the sharecropper shacks used to be.

I can't afford to buy a metal detector now, but instead would be interested in renting one. I want to try out the sport before I go and invest a lot in it. I was hoping that someone here would know of a place in the Covington/Baton Rouge, Louisiana area that rents them. There used to be a Civil War relic shop in Baton Rouge who did but he went out of business a few years ago. Now I have no idea where to look

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum...I cant help you on the rental ...but even a Walmart Cheaper brand metal detector ,like a Bounty would be better than nothing. And they find alot of stuff that you would miss. Your farm sounds like a great place to hunt, but alot of area to cover. You might want to look at some of the clubs in your area and team up with someone ,plus they might have used machines for sale or check the for sale ads . Rentals can be pricey too. Or talk to a dealer about trying one out for a couple of days . Good luck..and we look forward to your "new"finds!

I Have to agree with Gypsy on this.

What it would Cost you to Rent a Machine for a Week,
Would Probably be what it would cost for a Walmart Bounty Hunter.

Plus, If your carefull with it, You can return it within 10 days for a Full
Refund, & hit up another Walmart, for another 10 Days ;) :D ;D

We have 5 walmarts in the area, that's 50 days ;)

how many are in your area ?

A Bounty Hunter from Wal-Mart - I'll look into that. I also searched the clubs section of the forum and found a couple within forty miles of my place, so that's good, too. I guess it would make more sense to buy a detector - then I can go out whenever I feel like it. I find the idea of finding a coin, token, or trinket that my great-great-great grandfather, or any relative, may have been carrying around intriguing. I guess it is part of the genealogy kick that I?ve been on lately. I do live in a good spot, and I love it here. I?m glad my relatives had the foresight to keep most of it in the family. No legends of buried treasure, but there might be a mason jar or two?.

EDIT>>>

Well, I looked on the Wal-Mart website and they have two that may suit my needs - which do you suggest is more value for money?

There is the $50 special here:

Or should I spend the extra $50 for this one:

I'm leaning towards the $100 one but what do you guys think?

I'd go with the $100 one. I bought that one for my son who decided he didn't like MDing. So, I used it while my Minelab was in the shop. It worked good! Not quite the same depth as mine, but sometimes that's a blessing, LOL!

i started out with that very detector, Pioneer EX....it works great, found a lot of stuff with it, but the lack of a pinpoint mode makes it a little more difficult to find the target....if you are willing to take a little more time locating targets it will work great for you, hard to beat for a hundred bucks

hope you get a detector soon and good luck!!
