Searching half-dollars

Well, read through these forums. There are several posts for newbies that will tell you everything you ever wanted to know.
:)

The newer ones weren't released for circulation, and they have smaller mintages. Choicer coins, fewer of them.

Someday the remainder may be melted, who knows? Grab the ones you can just for fun... they ain't worth much right now.

Grab a copy of the new Cherrypickers guide for newer errors, or search the web and this forum for newer error coins.

Anything after '01 was not intended for circulation. Save the '87s too, low mintage. If you know about the silver ones, that's about it, unless you're into error coins. If I find an obvious error, I'll keep it. I don't scrutinize every coin looking for a DDO or anything, just look at the dates.

Some people when CRH check just the edges for silver, but I would have missed a lot of 40% that way. 90% stand out, those I don't think anyone could miss. You'd miss the post '01 and the '87s edge checking too.

MF is right, plenty of posts here, just read on and see what other CRHers are finding. Some people could give a rat's patoot about proofs (unless they are silver), like me. I keep only 1 from each year, rolled the rest up with the rejects. I save only 1 of each post '01, rest go to the dump too. Still looking for my '87, searched over 10,000 halves and still nada.

Other than that, I save any 1970 and earlier. Good luck, post your finds here and don't forget the pics! ;D

I've always thought that the missing FG initials on the 82 and 83 halves were on the "Heads" side of the Kennedy half located at the bottom of his neck. Then I heard the initials are missing from the back of the coin. Which is correct? I figured this question fit in this thread.

Thanks 65. Where on the back and what's the value? I'm like Rob, is it worthwhile to soend all that extra time looking for errors or just go for the silver and proofs?

"Worthwhile" is tough to define. Depends on your interest level. I don't find many errors for the number of coins examined for them. I also only look for a few errors. I don't examine every coin on both the obverse and reverse.

The FG is located between the tail feathers and the leg thigh holding the arrows. I don't really know the value as I have not sold any.
