Hello,

Had some time before work today to hit up a bunch of banks. Managed to dump $300 in nickles, and bought $400 more! :) 2 boxes were from the fed, so I saved them for last. The other $200 was a mix of hand rolls and fed rolls, and the lady thanked me for taking them all! My pleasure ma'am! ;D)

I searched the mix boxes first, and had a few nice finds. The previous $300 yeilded zero silver nickles, but I found 2 in that $200 mix. Also found a 1946s which fills a slot in the folder.

Box 3 was fairly uneventful, but a nice mix of pre 1960s.

Box four was borderline dreamy. Halfway through I was getting very discouraged. I had 3 or 4 keepers, and most were 1959. Then out pops a BEAUTIFUL 1951s! Full steps, absolutly beautiful coin. Not a scratch on it! Had to do a little holler for that one ;D) About 5-10 rolls later, I am pulling down coins and flipping them to all heads for my date search, when a coin stops me dead in my tracks. I am still goosebumpy from this one. The coin I saw was stunning - absolutly beautiful in color, tone, and detail. I carefully picked it up, and saw a beautiful thing - 1977s!!!!! My second proof, but this one is in prooflike condition still! No scratches, AMAZING luster, and just wow...I felt very out of place handling such a special coin out of a protective sleeve. Needless to say, I quickly carded this one, and had to stop for a while from the rush. And then, to top off the box, I pulled my third silver of the night. I also wound up with a good number of other keepers from the box, so it turned out to be very nice indeed despite the slow start to it.

Also, I found a 1947 with what may be a d/s or s/d. I dont see any mention of this variation on the major coin sites, but this nickle has a strange look on the mint mark. What do ya'll think? Is it a D? Is it an S? Or is it both?

Grand total for 4 boxes(as reflected by the picture)
1939-1949: 22 nickles
War Nickles: 3
1951s
1947 with ? mintmark
1946s
1977s Proof: 1
1950-1959: 43 nickles

Thanks for reading,
Anthony

Nice finds on the nickels. The 47 is a D, the funny look at the bottom left of the mint mark is post mint damage.

It looks like the "funny mark" is raised and not part of the original D. I'm not too knowledgeable about error coins but just curious as to why you think that it is circulation damage?

Grats on the silver and other great finds. You are now beating me in total proofs found! =)

Agree on the D of the mintmark as well.

Nice work and keep it up!

I may have you in proofs, but you mentioned you had a horde of war nickles. I dare ask - how many boxes?

Oh... I've gone through PLENTY of boxes.

But I was fortunate enough to get a really nice collection of oldies from some handrolls.

I got into a conversation with a teller who had seen me come in everyday for like the whole week. I told him why I always getting change and asked him if anything old looking had come in lately. He was like... "Actually... one person brought in a handful of nickel rolls that were so old they were falling apart. I had to reroll them before putting them in my vault."

He said they were kept in an attic or something... no idea how he knew that... must of asked why they looked so bad.

Anywho... towards the end of my like $300-400 in handrolls from that and a few other banks I hit a roll in a different wrapper... really new looking... sky blue lines on the side instead of those ugly dark blue ones.

I dump it out and there wasn't a single post-60 nickel in there. And there must have been like 9-10 war nicks in that one roll. I looked for that wrapper... found like 7-8 more of them and set them aside to open after I finished all the rest. Each of the rolls was the same... I think I got like 3-4 post 60 nickels and they were from 61 or 62.

I ended up with a bunch of nickels I needed to fill holes in my folder, and a sweet stash of war nicks.

Thats why I always tell people to get handrolls and not only boxes.

I dream of a sweet handroll stash like that. I like fed rolls for regularity, and hand rolls for the odds that you just mentioned.

Reminds me of the teller than said someone had changed in rolls of war nickles recently. Shame I missed those! I met a guy recently who said in 1964 his dad bought 5 boxes of nickles and threw them in the attic. He believes they are all fresh mint rolls of brand new nickles, but I haven't seen them, and cannot be sure. If they are mixed rolls I would love to get my hands on them, but I don't think he would open a box for me to check. Either way, I am happy doing it from the bank. Filled another slot in my coin folder with today's pickup :).
