Sea Hunter help (is it broken?)

Before I call KellyCo or Garrett, I wanted to confirm this with a few seasoned users.

And sorry for starting a new Sea Hunter thread, but didn't want this to get included in the others if it is just user error.

Ok ... Got my Sea Hunter, and used it three times.

The first day was incredible. The thing was finding everything. One target was a foot deep, and the sensitivity amazed me.

The second day is where the problem happened. At first everything was working fine. I'm searching very clean areas, so I had it on Standard with a threshold just at a level where it was audible (as Garrett recommends). After about an hour of using, I took a break and turned it off. I turned it back on, and it seemed different. It wasn't giving me any feedback. I had my g/f's gold ring with me, and it barely picked that up. Then it stopped picking it up altogether!!!! I switched it to Discreet Trash mode, and it would give a small beep for the ring. If I buried the ring in 4 inches of sand, nothing.

I switched it back to Standard, and still not a reliable tone over the ring (and if I got a tone, it was very weak). It still picked up aluminum and other medals, but seemed a heck of a lot weaker that the first day and earlier that day.

So I switched batteries (even though I was getting 4 beeps when turning the unit on). Even with the new batteries, it was still weaker.

I took it out yesterday, a third day, and it seemed to be working fine again. I buried the ring deep, and it picked it up.

Then after an hour or so, I turned it off, and the problem came back! I didn't change a single setting on it, and it went weak again. It also seems that the on/off switch might be a little off. I really have to try to target Standard mode when turning it on.

Anyone else experiencing this?? I checked all my lines and connections, so I'm perplexed if there's something else I'm over looking. Any help would be great. Thanks - Lucky

Can't believe I spelled "metal" wrong in my original post!!!

True on everything you said, but if it is broken, I think I would prefer a new one from KellyCo... I just bought it 3 weeks ago.

But I will contact Garrett's tech support before doing this. I want to eliminate the possibility of user error before asking for a replacement.

I doubt Kellyco will send you a new one, but you never know. They might just send it in for repair to Garrett so that will take longer to get it back than if you sent it in directly.

I seems to me that you have a voltage problem where the thing is leaking power in a circuit. Let us know the results of the call to Garrett.

Good Luck, Sea Hunter is a good unit.

My guess is that there is something wrong with the machine or coil. I am wondering if water is getting inside the connector at the box and somehow getting inside the coaxial cable, which in turn is causing problems. I would try to exchange it for a working model. I have had the Sea Hunter and it is one DEEP machine.

Good luck!

Talked to Garrett support - Class act all the way. There is a defect / issue with the unit, and Garrett has fantastic customer service.

KellyCo - A little disappointed. I purchased this unit on the 29th of December, used it a total of three times (maybe 6 hours total), and their only advice was to contact the manufacturer. I was definately expecting something more.

Either way, Garrett to the rescue and I'm very happy about that. Us Garrett users are in good hands.

Yes sir that is what Sandman & myself told you ............Kellyco would not help you ............ Go to Garrett and they will get it fixed up for you............. Garrett great service......
