Screw or button?

Hi all!
I need help to identify this screw/button.
I think is a screw because of its shape and weight but what confuse me is the yellow/gold color inside the reliefs.
Ornamental screw?
I hope for your help.

It was completely gilt at one stage, the only surviving gilt is in the hollows.

It a circa 16th C furniture stud, probably a box stud.
