I had more pictures of the artifacts so decided to post them. There were several mounds about 5 or 6 miles from where these were found. A complete skeleton and bowls and other items were found across the field from where the scraper was found. I don't know anything about what tribes were in this area.Could anyone tell me what people were lived in N.E Arkansas when the mounds were built? Most of the mounds are wore down or flat in this area. Tractors or back-hoes are always digging up relics or skeletons. A Mastodon was recovered digging a ditch about 20 miles from here.Does anyone think the mounds are that old? Any information would be helpful. Thanks for your help.
zztop. HH and good luck in February.

I'm not sure about what tribes are from around N.E. AR but my parents are from Piggott and they would always tell me about burial mounds around there on farms.
I'll talk to my mom & see if she can remember hearing anything about what tribes.
Those are nice pieces by the way.

I've got this map if it shows up well enough to read. I've got 2 diff. 1's.The 2nd ! doesn't really show N.E AR but
Hope this helps. It shows the QUAPAW & the CHICKASAW . 8)

Thanks Demon Cat, My family were from KY and VA and migrated here from there. My g-grandfather and g-grandmother were Cherokee and owned and farmed lands in Ky.He was forced off his land and later snuck back and reclaimed his land.We don't have anything from them except some pictures...
I'm very interested in the tribes from here, some of the mounds are flat and are accidentally dug into each year. The farmers try to keep this quite due to arkies blocking off their farm land.I can see both sides ....but would love to see the past preserved.
Thanks and HH zztop

Those are good maps showing the locations of tribes AFTER European contact. The Quapaw were actualy a recent tribe to come to Arkansas. They were still living on the Ohio River in the early 1600's.
There was a tribe of course in that area, the most likely to have built those mounds were a Muskogean speaking group probably related to the Chicksaws.
This group was called "Taensa" and were pushed out by the Quapaw tribe as they were driven down by other Siouxan speaking tribes. I know that since Chicksaw oral tradition claims a lot of the mounds of Arkansas as their own, It would be fair to reason that the Taensa became part of the Chicksaw tribe after they were driven out of Arkansas. Caddoan oral tradition is that the Taensa and Chicksaws were both enemy tribes, and that they helped the Quapaws establish a home in Arkansas. Hope this helps. Its just hard to pin a particular tribe in some areas, because even without European/American influence, they still tended to migrate, invade, and counter invade one another, sometimes blending together, sometimes not.
