Scovill Button Help - SOLVED

[SMS88]

I found this button last weekend in NY . The legend on the back is SCOVILL MG CO WATERBURY. I believe the date range is 1850-1865 but I dont know anything about the obverse detail. Is this a military button? What does the 71 refer to?

Yes... apparently they carry a CW attribution, but I onl have this description so far. Quoted below:

"45. CIVIL WAR ERA PAIR OF EPAULETES , gilded
brass crescents and gold bullion fringe. Along with
a later pair, all cloth, each with a button inscribed
with “71” within a wreath. Four pieces total. Second
half 19th century. 5” x 7”. Very good condition with
losses to backing. Estimate: $75 - $125."

Your button predates the Civil War.
" Of the buttons produced using the Scovill name, the use of "Scovill MG." dates to the early 1850's, it then evolved into "Scovill MF'G" sometime in the mid 1850's."

I just found some more like your's... with different numbers.

Your's should be New York 17th Regiment. "*Scovill Mf'g Co*/Waterbury" 23mm

Here is the obverse of your button on a Browning button worn by the New York 71st. Regiment during the Indian Wars (c.1870's-1890's). My guess is your button, made by Scovill, was worn by the NY 71st Reg. sometime before 1860.
