Dad, Land-Mag & I were trying to sort out which site to work on this weekend with very limited time, 45 minutes per site.
We started on a site we knew was Roman as we had found coins in the wood next to the field but never tried the ploughed land (new land this year). Did pretty good for a very short hunt, had a massive Roman Lead Steelyard weight (good sign) & 1 & a bit Roman Coins. Even better was the amazing conditioned Venetian Soldino (hammered silver from Italy), commonly referred to as Galley Halfpennies. It by far my best example (only have maybe 3)
Second site (picture 4) was totally new to us other than the cropmark we spotted which we thought to be Celtic/Roman. We found some pottery spread (Roman) but no positive signs of a productive site. What did please me was a nice cast lead Medieval button of a type I've not seen (Dad got the Buckle)
So tomorrow is plan C
