Today I decided to do some scouting in a section of woods that is about 2.5 km square. I knew there had been colonial activity all around the area, so I thought I'd give it a go! I had walked for quite a distance with little to show when I got an overload signal, which generally means modern junk just under the surface on my machine. I dug the target anyway and was pleasantly surprised to cross another item off my wish list, and only about two inches deep. Thought I had it made when a few hundred yards later I found what appeared to be a cellar hole - one square nail was the only signal anywhere near the hole. I think it warrants a return trip!

beautiful profile. How common are those?

I'm still looking for mine!
That's a really nice big one you found, your site should be nearby, good luck with the rest of your finds there!

Great Save,
I would agree, I do not think they are that common to find with a metal detector.
In 15+ years I have only found 1.
Congrats
Kevin

Found a broken up piece of one in Jersey :icon_scratch: but like you said not a common find anywhere . Nice one too ! WTG

Nice score man. Are you going to restore it? Those eared patter types are found at Rev war sites. I smell Loyalist.....cheers!

Hunthicks: Very nice find. Are you in the former Colonies or the old Northwest? That one really could be 18th century!

I plan to clean it up, never know, there may be a mark hiding under there! Definitely Rev war activity within 3 KM of where this was found. ;)

Eastern Canada! I'd put the date firmly in the 18th century, given the area had settlers that entire time.

I'm hoping it's close, finding a cellar hole so close got me going, but with the lack of finds I wonder if it was a lumber post or something obscure. Not that they'd have needed to travel very far in those days to find suitable trees to cut!

Good looking colonial axe. Looks like it will clean up nicely.

Sweet trade axe, found the same one years back....yeah a return visit would be nice muhahaha:laughing7:

That's one cool find for sure, that's like the one Mel Gibson used in that movie he did about the revolutionary war, nice oldie for sure

We can kill a few hours there someday, must be some other goodies around. It was about two KM from the parking spot though!
