Today, me and my middle son (8yr and loves MD'ing) finally found a coin other than a wheatie. He wasn't really into going but went so dad didn't go alone. Turns out to be our best day out since we started this hobby in February. We went to a place here in Lancaster that I've been saying there's got to be some old roundness and there was. Off the beaten path next to a layered rock outcropping exactly where I thought we'd find something. As we came up on the spot I had told him that the outcropping coud be holding coins that fell edge down and got trapped. Well, it wasn't in the rock but darn close. What a great father/son day!

Nice find and even better sharing memories with your son Vladio. Thanks for sharing...

Can we see a photo of the large cent? Congrats! Still trying to get my 7 year old to buy in to MD'ing. :) He's sometimes interested but usually bored.

I will get a pic on here soon. It's almost black with green crud. I'm going to visit a coin dealer and see what they say about it. I'll never sell it so cleaning it up so its recognizable is what I'm thinking. Right now, it's hard to tell what it is.

We've been going out regularly and with varied success. Friday we found a '39 nickel at a place we've hunted before. We also found a '09 wheatie in the same area earlier this summer. Sunday I suggested we go for only an hour or so. My son, I could tell, would of rather played Xbox but my wife and I don't allow it when it's nice outside - they have all winter to do indoor stuff. After getting to where I thought would be a good place we got off the beaten path and began to scan wherever the brush wasn't too thick. We came up on a place that just looked like someplace that someone a couple hundred years ago would go to relax. There was a nice outcropping of rock and I had told my son that this looked like a really good place. When the ATP lit up with a 89 we initially though it was another ball of foil like what we had just found 3 times in the same area. But, the signal was very consistent showing 88 & 89's only. I pinpointed the hit and it showed only 2". I said it couldn't be that old if its that shallow. Boy, was I wrong. I pushed the digger in a couple inches and flipped the dirt over exposing the cent. At this point neither had an idea what we dug. I picked it up and could tell by the weight that we found something good. As we rubbed it trying to see what it was my son yelled that we found something good even though we couldn't make out what it was. The light colored dirt actually made it easier to see once we got it to a certan point. The expression on his face was priceless, one ill never forget. We've worked hard over the last six months and really never got anything more than wheaties - which is fine by me but my son wanted something more I could tell. Well, he's a happy camper now and is looking forward to our next outing. Hopefully we can make it back out this week and pick up where we left off.

Good hunting to all!

Congrats on your find, got a Pic?

Congrats! I love taking the kids with me, they make it all the more fun. HH!

Here a couple pics after I cleaned it. I talked to a local coin dealer today to get his opinion on cleaning it and he suggested doing so. When I said that I found it with my son and would never get rid of it is when he suggested cleaning it up. Mother nature's not very nice to copper.

Nice find! I was about that age when my Dad got me interested in MDing! Dad has passed, and I've been thinking about it for years and finally went out and bought one last year. Totally addicting! I live in Manheim, not very far from you, so feel free to message me if you want try out any new places.

Your large cent is absolutely lovely!:hello2::icon_sunny::icon_flower:Totally groovy that you and your son persisted & found this together! HAVE FUN! Andi

Very good looking old coin, I'm glad you got your son out with you, the lure of the real world sometimes can't compete with the lure of video fantasy. I'm fighting that battle with my 19 yr old, against the lure of Grand Theft Auto, It just came out the other day, I hate to lose him to something like that.

We need to put our heads together and find someone with property in Gettysburg. I had a lead from a neighbor that works with a guy who's mother has a farm there but some guys she allowed to MD there last summer soured her to detecting. I txt the guy last month and he never replied.

Congrats on the great find and the experience with your son Vladio. I can't wait until our boys get a little older and I can do the same:icon_thumright:

It seems like everybody has an LC now..except me and Argentium:icon_scratch:

I'm gonna dig us both up one this weekend Arg!!

HH,
Chris

Thank you to all that commented. More luck than skill though. Lol. We were in the right place.

We went back yesterday and didn't find anything other than new coins. We'd love to find something silver sometime.

I'm pretty sure my son won't forget finding it. He loves finding things, always has.

I'm not sure how common or easy to find these are but the reaction Liam had when we found this was priceless. If you're going to get lucky enough to find one I hope you little ones are with. Absolutely priceless.
