Its been a while since I last posted, I been hunting a bit more now that fall rains have started and family health issues have been adressed. I have been revisiting old sites with the Explorer Pro, with fantastic results. Can't even begin to count the indianheads that have fallen victim to this monster of a machine! I had gotten permission to hunt a one room school house earlier this year and had pretty good results with my old minelab even getting my first Barber half that day which the owner had admired greatly. So being very grateful for the chance to hunt this old spot, I mounted the barber in a frame and the other day presented it to the land owner, he was overjoyed to say the least! He told me that I should get back there and hunt it some more and I figuired with the way the new machine was hittin those deepies at my other spots that this just might be a real pay day here. Two days later I arrived back at the school with explorer in hand and ready to see what she could do. My first hit was an old wooden handled jackknife in rough shape, was'nt long after I hit a nice solid tone and pulled a nice 1893 indianhead :) this is fun I thought. I kept up walking the grid till I get my second indain of the morning a 1875 but this one is damaged by god only knows? Rats! would have been a beauty if it did'nt have that punch mark on it. Continuning on the grid march, I suddenly hit a very small signal and the depth meter was saying it was deep enough to be a oldie! I cut out a nice big plug and set it aside pulled out my sheet to start piling my dirt and then swung the coil over the hole....No signal????? I swung the plug and a solid hit??? must be a newer coin that fooled me I thought. So I grab the plug and shake it onto the sheet , swing the sheet and get a solid hit again, so out comes the pinpointer a few easy passes and she sings that song I like to hear and I spot a glint of silver! I reached down and pic up this ever so tint piece of gleaming silver with dirt still hanging on it and just blow on it once, and to my amazed eyes there she was in all her glory!!!! a capped bust!!!!! I started shaking as I flipped the coin over to see the letters....5c on her backside! Half dime I yelled! I could'nt get a grip on my cell phone fast enough, Had to call my detecting buddys and let them know what I had just gotten. I guess maybe this is'nt the oldest or best coin thats ever appeared on T-net but I am sure proud of her, my county here was settled in 1830, so this coin was dropped by one of the first people to ever walk this part of the country and to be a half dime is real awesome cause anybody thats ever found one will tell you its a rare coin and hard to detect just because of its very small size. I hope you all enjoy the pic as much as I do, I'll try to post some pics later of the indians and other stuff I found. I almost forgot, I have only covered 1/4 of this yard so far, so I still got high hopes :D

Happy Hunting

The detecting gods rewarded you for giving the land owner that Barber 1/2, which was very nice to do in the frame and all . That half dime sure is a nice coin, congratulations to you WTG :icon_thumleft:

Great yard hunt it out

Holy Toledo! I don't know why that phrase occurred to me as I read your story, you're from Mendon [I don't know where that is, up 131 north of Big Rapids?] and you guys are usually in the football playoffs, I know that much.

Getting that Barber framed for the owner is a great touch. I've presented site owners with some cool things, but that's a classy way to do it with a coin.

I know there are LC's, Seated coins, and Liberty Cap coins in Michigan. I haven't found any of those, but when someone like you makes a fantastic hit like this, it keeps the faith going.

I'm going over to look at the PCGS site about this beauty. It doesn't matter what it's worth, it's a great, great find in any case. I just like going to look them up and only do it when a coin flat out blows my skirt clean over my head (as one of my foremen used to say).

WTG!!

Jack, Congrats on a great find. Keep in mind that a coin with that much wear may have been heavily circulated. Half Dimes were minted through1873. The coin may have been 40 years old when it was lost. I used to be baffled when I found coins that were older than the site. For example, I found a worn 1801 Large Cent in a community that was first settled after 1850. Back in the day, most people were not interested in collecting older coins. They were too important for survival. (We may be headed in that direction :-[ . Just yesterday a coworker showed me a mercury dime he received in pocket change. This year I have received more silver in pocket change than I have over the last 10 years combined!)

Definately one of the nicest coins I've seen on this site, and in great shape too. Congratulations!

Joe

Nice looking Half Dime!

Enjoyed your story. If I can't find one, at least I can live vicariously through your story. Nice find!!! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks all for the comments and kind words, To Admiral De Salee... Mendon is near the Indiana border just south of Kazoo, and yes we do have a slew of state football championships here, I think 9 in the last 20 years, could be more I lost count :). Thats a good attitude you have as there are alot of older sites here in this state, especially in the lower or southern portions and research is the key to locating them. I spend more hours looking for places then I actually do detecting them. As far as the monatary value of this coin, I really don't think its super valuable, but to me personally its worth tons for not only the historic value, but for the fact that its about as old of a coin as I could hope to find here in Michigan. I think the only way I could find older is to find a fur trappers encampment. hmmmmmm gets me thinkin now! lol Thanks for your posts again
