OMG!!! DID I JUST FIND A SCALPEL FROM THE CIVIL WAR?
Wanted to ask everyone what they thought of this relic? I found this knife at the same site I found my CS oval buckle and 2 Alabama Volunteer Corp coat buttons. I swear it looks just like a scalpel. This thing is heavy and still very sharp! My father, who is a relic hunter, seems to think it might be an oyster knife that was used by the Confederates when they were here in 1861-2 but I disagree. The Confederate blob nosed Gardner was found near it and is for size reference. As you can tell I have electrolycized the knife. Now if I could only get a positive ID on it! I have included 2 pictures of documented scalpels (medical kits) used during the Civil War at museums around the country. So..... what do you think? Scalpel, oyster knife or something else?
