I found this today in an area I find late 1800's objects fairly regularly.
When this popped out of the ground I was almost certain it was a scabbard tip... But after looking at it more closely it has me confused.
I will stop typing here and answer any questions if necessary... let me thank in advance anyone who can lend a hand.

I should probably say what has me confused is the fact that it's open on both ends and the attachment holes are on the smaller of the two ends while the other end appears to be where the blade is inserted.

It's not a scabbard tip but a scabbard throat (and related parts), that is, the end where the holes are attaches to the middle section of the scabbard and eventually down to the tip at the bottom. -this is a poor explanation, but perhaps it gets the idea across.

You're correct and I just avoided a lengthy explanation and used the word tip.. Since it's lacking the width for the part closest to the hilt..(throat) I am guessing it came from the other end and is missing the small tip section it probably looked something like this?... maybe?

You did not provide any size-measurements, so the following analysis is based on comparing the size of your fingers with the scabbard-throat. The size of the blade-slot seems to be too small to accommodate a bayonet's blade. (The slot appears to be a bit less long than your finger's width.) It seems more appropriate for a dagger's narrow blade than a bayonet's blade... most of which are "wider" than that little slot. Please tell us the slot's size-measurements.

Of course, I could be wrong. Although I've "dabbled" in edged-weapons in my decades as a relic-dealer, they are not my specialty-area of Military relic study.

Thank you for lending a hand.
The opening is 3/4 of an inch

I agree that it is a throat for a small dagger sheath. Many of the sheaths for English made daggers and bowie style knives had such throats and a metal (usually nickel silver) tip on a scabbard made of paper mache' and covered with a thin veneer of leather. These didn't last long unless the said knife was carried only by a gentleman who kept it in a vest pocket. Cool little find.
