says ?????????????????

Using my mxt pro ,the last several hunts I have had trouble with relic hunting mode.Running relic wide open and disc o and when I find a real loud good signal what is suppose to be non ferrous turns instead ferrous.I have been able to hunt a camp and staging area and place has a total of 35 acres and my last few finds have disappointed me.It said buckle then once out of the ground turn out to be iron.Maybe im nuts but this really happens , any answers????????? I have thought maybe gain to high?????

Im guessing these are larger bits of iron? Not nails or similar size iron.

NO metal detector on planet Earth can tell what kind of metal is in the ground. Or if it's a coin or whatever. That's NOT how they work.
They work on conductivity.

If you take a pull tab from a beer/soda can it's not going to give you the same reading as the whole can will. Both the same metal, only the amount or size changes. Well it works the same on iron too. Small bits will be very low in the conductive range where larger pieced will ring in the higher conductive ranges. Works the same with all metal.

It should run much the same as the MXT300 and I usually run mine at +2 gain as any higher and there's a little too much noise to hear those faint whisper signals, you might not always want to run as hot as +2 gain even like when your in a bad EMI area. HH

A piece of iron in the ground can make any detector sound like it's giving a non ferrous signal, especially the bigger the iron target is. As you dig your signal will also change the closer your target becomes with your coil. Like beer caps that sound great 6 inches in the ground, once out they sound like junk.

I love my MXT !!!!

I have been fooled by chunky corroded iron as you describe. I think it can set a "halo" in the ground that can sound like a good target. I will sometimes dig these iffy signals if they satisfy the three "s" rule. I have been rewarded with deep silver or "on edge" silver with these types of signals. You really have to dig everything to learn what your machine is trying to tell you.

Thanks everyone for there input.Johnnoh seems to be close to what I am talking about. This is the first time I have encountered anything like this .Thanks
