saved a life while MD'ing!

went looking for a place to MD yesterday with my better half. found this old city park that kept rattling my memory. turns out, about 30 years ago or so it was the first place i ever saw someone metal detect! i remember seeing a lady pulling coins out of the ground and it just amazed me as a child. she took the time to explain what she was doing and well, here i am now, part of the hobby! it was kinda cool to find the place where you got introduced to a lifelong hobby after soo many years!

anyways... towards the back of the park where some nice old trees and some picnic tables. we headed back there. there was an old concrete slab with something weird on it. my better half called me over to look at it. it looked like a tree stump from far away. as i got closer i realized it was a big eagle like bird.

the bird was struggling to stand and was hanging its head down low. looked like a hawk of some kind once i got closer. i called the wildlife hospital at the museum i work at and they said bring it in. great... hmm.. how do you grab a hawk? he's sick and all but this guy could mess me up if he has any energy left.

i grabbed a towel and came up behind him and wrapped him in it. he was soo weak he didnt even fight. he did grab my finger with his talons though and had one heck of a grip even though he was sick. once i had him we threw the MD'ers in the car and headed off to the musuem.

turns out its a young red shouldered hawk and he had been poisoned. they said they might be able to save him. i just checked up on him and he made it through the night so he might pull through.

below is a pic of the hawk once i had him wrapped in the towel and on our way to the museum. this is probably one of the odder things i've had happen while MD'ing. hope the guy makes it and i get to see him released again!

All I can say is you ARE THE MAN, That was awsome.Good job.

Re: saved a life while MD'ing!

Good deed bro. Unlike us who can go to a hospital when we're feeling f'd up, an animal can't do anything but endure. I hope it pulls through.

Re: saved a life while MD'ing!

Wow. Great job man. I hope he survives. Keep us up to date.
Thanks, Mike

That's a beautiful bird, and you did a great thing taking time out of your life to try and save such a wonderful bird. Please keep us posted on its outcome. you are to be commended great job, may the silver gods be kind to you!!!

Re: saved a life while MD'ing!

It does look like a young hawk or falcon of some kind.

That was really a nice thing you did..I hope the bird gets well enough to fly once again.

Re: saved a life while MD'ing!

just talked to the lady at the animal hospital and she said the bird is critical and hanging on by a thread. she thought he'd let go today but he's been holding on. hope the little guy makes it!

Congratulations!

While metal detecting last Easter Sunday, I observed a group of teens purposely run down a pregnant raccoon in a school parking lot for the fun of it. I took her to a wildlife hospital just outside of town, but unfortunately she did not survive nor did her babies. But I am glad to hear that there are other animal lovers out there who are willing to help save a life! I tip my hat to you good sir, people like you are hard to find now a days. A job well done!

Re: saved a life while MD'ing!

Re-Tek....KUDOS to you both for the unselfish deed you performed in saving that birds life!!! I pray he will continue to fight and you will soon see him soaring in the blue sky above.

We saw a beautiful Eagle flying over our camporee this weekend....watching how he was gliding with the winds!!!!!!!!

StarWars....you receive KUDOS for also trying to save a life, be they animal or human. Those kids, I wonder how they would feel if someone was trying to run over their pet!!! Kids today, just don't seem to have respect for anything these days, not even of themselves...I BETTER NEVER catch my boys ever doing that...they don't have to worry about the cops...they have the WRATH OF MOM to FEAR!!!!!

Re: saved a life while MD'ing!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm glad you took the time to help that poor fellow.

Re: saved a life while MD'ing!

i hope the bird makes it. they are awesome predators. its a shame he was poisoned. maybe got a hold of a poisoned rat or something. that was a nice thing you did, you should be proud of yourself. ;)

Re: saved a life while MD'ing!

Great job.
Hope he (she) make it.

Re: saved a life while MD'ing!

Great Job! I hope he pulls through. Not only are we detectorist, but conservationist as well. Maybe your new name should be Red Hawk. :)

Re: saved a life while MD'ing!

Good job on the save. Those red shouldered hawks are good looking animals. We had a couple nesting in the eaves at work. They have since moved on. WTG
