Saved $30 by trying to spend $50 in halves

On my way to Home Depot I stopped by Chase Bank and was able to by $50 in customer wrapped halves (Skunks). My next stop was Home Depot where I buying a large umbrella for my deck. The umbrella cost $299, I was using the the rolls of halves as part of the payment. The young clerk said he had to count them all. He had never seen them before and thought the were dollar coins. The first roll only had 19 halves, so I took back one half and gave him a bicentennial Ike. When he read the date 1776 he really started to get confused. He then said, "If I give you a $30 discount, will you pay with a debit or credit card?" I said, "No problem." pulled out my debit card and got a $30 discount on my purchase.

Too funny! I have found a lot of this kind of ignorance lately. I stopped into a local store recently and asked if they had any half dollars and wish I had a video camera to record the response I got... "who rips dollars in half?"

A few years ago I bought a John deer lawn tractor from Home Depot. Was paying cash almost 3k. They gave me a 20% discount to pay with my debit card instead of cash. They didn't want that amount on hand. Thought it was odd but heck yeah I took there offer.

Halves are funny that way...found the secret to parking garages was half dollars. I tried to pay my $10 fee with a roll of halves. The guy said he didn't have to take them and before I could even begin to argue he repeated himself and pointed to the open gate....good way to save on parking.
