I haven't been able to identify this buckle. I'm hoping it might be an easy one for some of you who are much more familiar with war artifacts.
It was found in a salt marsh in Savannah, GA. I put a thin coating of sealant on it to stop further degradation until I was better informed on conservation. I would greatly appreciate any info that can be provided. The area saw Revolutionary War action, and also Civil War. I believe a regiment from Michigan engaged in a battle at this location during the civil war, but I can't remember details. Thanks.

According to the book "American Military Belt Plates" your rectangular buckle with the letters US inside an oval was first developed in 1872, and "was worn for garrison dress by Army enlisted personnel [privates, corporals, and sergeants] from around 1880 to 1902."
