I got out for a few hours Saturday on a rough plowed field, the winter didn?t break the field down much but it wasn?t very muddy.? It started out really slow, didn?t find anything the first hour but a few pieces of junk.? The second hour was interesting and I found a few finds and a great coin find, an American Indian Head Penny.
1864 Indian Head Penny obverse, that isn?t my scratch on it.? I also found a Wheat Cent on this field.? Amazing for a German field.
1864 Indian Head reverse
The rest of the finds, a lead seal for salt, a religious cross that says souvenir on one side, an 1874 1 Pfennig and a red stone possibly from a ring.? The stone is probably glass, an eye find on the surface, I ran a grid around the stone hoping to find the ring but didn?t find anything.? Also found a lead bullet and a small musket ball.
After the Easter festivities slowed down today, I was granted a detecting pass from wifey for a few hours as long as I couldn?t be seen, whatever, so I went to this site where a cellar hole is on top of a big hill.? It?s at the edge of a rock quarry and will soon be crushed and mined.? Had intended to dig out that hole but when I got there, my friend had cut all the trees down in this area and cut one up in the hole.? I hunted around here for about 1.5 hours, found a key and a nail very deep under roots that I had to cut through.? Didn?t find much but it was fun being out there hunting an unusual spot.?
Here?s the same hole last Spring in 04, I should have dug it out back then, there are also two walls made of piled up rocks going down the backside of the hole down hill.? I really think this could have been a very early home, just received some info explaining the types of homes built over one thousand years ago and that hole fits and the area fits with the walls to enclose animals, but there is no water close by, Hmmm?? I found an 1851 Austrian 1 Kreuzer here last year but it doesn?t date the site.? HH, Mike
