Saturday afternoon's woodchip heartbreak
When I found this in the woodchips at a local elementary school playground today I stood there staring in perplexed wonderment. It appeared to be an 1885 Morgan silver dollar! Yes! Yes!
Wonderment quickly turned to disappointment however as I realized in my consternation that it was not as advertised. It just did not look right. IT WAS A FAKE! How could this be?
I was immediately left feeling the hollow emptiness that I am sure we all have felt- some more than others- at times. It was not real.
There is brutal irony here too! One year ago to the week, at this same rectangular strip-of-tease, I had a similar encounter. Back then it was an 1861 Confederate half dollar! It too was a fake, even saying "COPY" on the reverse.
Somewhere someone is laughing at me. Yep, the joke is on me.
But, "hello", I remember saying to myself BOTH times.......I am in a tot-lot after all. What else would I expect? REALLY!
