"Sao Thome" footnotes

Two footnotes to the ?Sao Thome? story:

1) Carracks the size of the Sao Thome could carry as much as 8,000 quintals of pepper, which is equivalent to just over one million pounds. The method of shipping pepper, was to stow it below decks, often in heavy sacks laid on top of the rock ballast and also on the next deck directly above. The third deck from the bottom was reserved for cargo belonging to the captain, officers, and wealthy aristocrats.

2) Situated in South Africa, St. Lucia Bay, was then estimated by Portuguese pilots to be located in latitude 27 20' South. Another accounting stated that the said bay was situated ?beyond the Simon Dote River about 50 leagues southward from Lorenzo Marquez Bay.? The place where survivors eventually landed was called ?The Country of the Fumos? by the Portuguese, and by the African natives ?Macomotes.?
