Went to a spot on the yankee trench where I had previously found 5 shot .69 3-ringers. Listening closely and hunting slowly, I was able to locate 6 more (out of an eventual 10 and one .58) in a space about the size of a large refrigerator. Some old Southern boy was pouring fire into some yankee's spot . . . !
Got a faint signal which turned out to be .69 #7, and found some pottery about 10" down in the trench.
I ended up pulling a good bit of a jug of some kind. Narrow at the bottom, then bigger, then narrow again at the top.
I was happy with the .69s, but more excited about the pottery. I've never found a bottle, or jug, or plate in a trench. This was an 1862 battle site. I went home and reassembled what I could. Wish I could have found the rest of it!
If anyone knows if this shape was specific to anything, please let me know. Mudduck found his first two .69s, one Gardner and a flat button.
Other digging buddy got an Eagle I, couple of knapsack hooks, and some bullets.
