Got this tag today in Baltimore City. Not certain what Company used the S.S.C. Co. designation. I've seen an online example of a brass tag with a larger hole and the same company designation but with more modern numbers and letters than this one. That example was purportedly for a mining company. Anyone seen one like this before?
Back is blank.

I do not find S.S.C. Co. in this list.

Here's a possibility that links this tag to a coal mining company in the United States. I did a search on "Southern States Coal Company" and found this article that appeared in the Nashville Union and American on 28 July 1875. img.jpg. Now I don't know that this company actually used the logo "S.S.C. Co", but the link is plausible. How the tag got to Baltimore is another mystery.

Thanks Tony. That's likely. Detailing of the 6 and 4 looks old to me.

Hey Tommy, nothing further on this beauty. You know how it is with detecting, you're usually not the first person to dig one, but this remains a 'head scratcher'.
