Welcome to TreasureNet!

I love the bit, and those "SC" conchos are awesome! I think they might be one-of-a-kind conchos? Do you live in South Carolina?

I would bet it's an 1800's era bit but what makes you think it's Civil War related?

I'd like to know if those conchos are from a certain military unit or just some dude's initials or something...

the only reason i thought that it was civil war as it is similar to union C W horse bits with the U S on the sides. don't know for sure, reason for posting. cwlead

Yes, makes sense, I wonder if they are carved from US conchos? I'll look at that too....

I looked in Topper's book titled Civil War Relics form South Carolina. but he doesn't show any horse equipment in the book. I agree the SC looks very unusual.

The book by Howard R. Crouch Horse Equipment of the Civil war Era. has allot of good stuff the Confederates used allot of civilian equipment as far as horse stuff the book is a good investment helped me identify some stuff I will look at it tonight and see if I can match it to anything.

It actually looks like GC and not SC...there's a distictive bend in the middle whereas an 'S' would be smooth...

This style of bit is still available today, so if one is found on a store wall rack, could I claim it was civil war era??????? Doubtful.

Sometimes this is called a sweet bit (or sweetwater bit) and variations have a cricket (copper or brass roller) that a nervious horse will roll with its tongue.
