Found this spoon handle piece this morning and it is the first pewter one I have found to have any initials or name on it. It appears to be a high quality pewter since it is rather solid, not rotting away like so many do, but the S B & Co mark I have never seen on a pewter spoon.

I assume the spoon is early 1800s and the S B & Co just might be American, but really have no idea, just a curiosity thing to try and find out the background of S B & Co......

Yep  1864, dealt in Silver Electroplate, and it explaines why Don thought the spoon was not of the usuall Pewter, that shows signs of flaking...good ID Frank  English electroplate silver: marks and hallmarks of British silver plate: Bo-Bz

Thanks for the inputs but I am not entirely convinced it is British! Not knowing how the British companies might have or might not have deviated from their official hallmark, my piece does not match in letter style nor are the letters in a recessed designed area, that is the reason I suspected American made and not British. Also, I believe a 1864 date might be a generation too late.

I see no evidence of silver plating, I coated the piece after cleaning with Blue Ribbon conditioner and it glistens a bit under the LED lights on the USB scope I used for the photograph... Despite that as it dries out it is getting the typical pewter seperation on the edges..

Added:
On that same page is listed a Samuel Buckley & Co. which is much closer to the possible site age and the hallmark used is much closer to my spoon. Although the marks shown on that website are for the successor of Samuel Buckley, so not sure what his exact mark was when he had the company, but is a better match?

Samuel Buckley & Co - Merchants and Metal Dealers initially in 109, New Street Birmingham c 1849-1852, then in 44-45 New Hall Hill Birmingham c 1852-1860 then in 1 Gt Charles St Birmingham c 1860-1880
