Today I found an extremely rusted quarter. It appears to be a 1972 Quarter. I could be wrong though as the rust is severe. Could this be fake? Or worth something? It also has a weird sound when i tap it against another coin. Does not sound like two coins clinking.

most likely a fake

Why would anybody fake a quarter? How could it be cheaper than 25 cents to make?

It's just a quarter that has been left out in some bad soil. I have found 1000's of them.

Stick it in some lemon juice and scrub it with salt and you'll see that it is just another quarter. I tumble all my dirty clad to make it presentable/spendable in just that, lemon juice and salt.
It's worth 25 cents and if you use vending machines, you don't even need to clean it!

Thanks for the replies, just wanted to check! I figured it was something along those lines.

If the question ever comes up again for you, try a magnet.
If it sticks, it is iron or steel and not a U.S. coin (with the exception of the steel war time cents).

Welcome to T-Net, PGHDevin!

I bet 80% of the clad quarters I find are orange!

Welcome to tnet.

1st - I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard PGHDevin! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forums: Select Your Area.... and selecting location information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country). You might also consider adding your state (or country) to your displayed profile (SETTINGS -> EDIT PROFILE) so if you ask a question, etc. - people may have more success helping you (your location may help, etc.)...

2nd - I agree with xr7ator.

They usually come out of the dirt with that rust look to them. I just tumble my coins at the end of each year, mix them in with some clean coins my wife saves and take them to the bank. Dimes will look the same way, unless they are silver.

You've found a great place for information and fellow treasure hunters -- welcome to our community!
