I've been using a Deus about 3 months. Often I get false high numbers with rusty iron. Dug several items yesterday rusty iron with solid numbers in the low 70's and repeatable. More often the rusty iron numbers fall in the high 90's. I use basic and 4-tones with sensitivity at 90. Thinking of lowering sensitivity. Any recommendations?

Dont focus on the number. Focus on the sound. Only very deep big iron and round iron with a hole in the center usually fools me. Most iron sounds terrible

While swinging back and fourth over the target, move the coil back towards you and big iron will typically turn from a good tone, to an iron tone as the coil gets on the fringe of the target. If the tone abruptly ends, without switching to iron grunts, as you move the coil back off the target, then it's typically a nonferrous. Iron loops and rings will always sound good though.

I used to try and determine the big iron, and the technique I mentioned works, but I gave up and just dig it all up now. I've unmasked 100's of items after removing iron, not to mention some of the best relics I've dug are iron... Bayonets, stirrups, cannon balls, scissors, hoe blades, axe heads... Etc. It's a lot more work, but always nice to find keeper iron.

posted a head to head video on another thread. i'm really wanting a Deus but was kinda set back when the Deus would not pick up a small silver at 5" when a iron nail was placed on top of the ground above the target.
I'm sure there is a program that would help with trashy areas.

Toatsed is correct ,I use full yones and have learned rhe sound thats key and like toasted the round iron with the hole in it still gets me.

the nail over the five inch coin will do that to any detector thats just where the technology is today. Take the nail and place it on the coin at 5 inchs and the machine will kill it,
that test in the video was hitting on a weak spot of ALL detectors.

Phish, also consider:

- Notching out 96-99 to eliminate a lot of the iron wrap-around
- If you are worried about missing a big silver, turn Normalization off. That will let those high conductors hit a bit lower on the VDI scale if you use 4, 8 or 12 kHz
- Check questionable targets by flipping to a 4 kHz program. In 4 kHz, iron sounds more like iron.

- No matter what you try, that big deep round iron will fool you often. Just dig it and move on :laughing7:

As a Great man once said "your shovel is the best discriminator"

do NOT forget to add, especially if it is a piranha shovel made by predator tools!

That's about what I was thinking as well. Kind of like hiding the house next door by holding your fist up in front of your eyes. No matter how big the house is, all you're gonna see is your fist. The nail is like your fist.

good analogy but it will get closer than that guy was showing.

Been using the Deus over ten months with hundreds of hours logged....some iron rings are unavoidable with the Deus.

Dug my largest ring ever about three weeks ago. Burried at roughly a 30 degree angle 10" deep at the top. VDI in ground was 89-90

Air tests at 94.

I believe it's a brooch. :laughing7:
