a person many years ago gave me this slice of an IRON Meteorite in a baggy..dont know where it came from, so i noticed it started to fall apart inside the bag through the years ..well i took the main piece , took the rust off it and polished both sides gently ! came out good hopefully the polish slows the rusting ... back into my collection it gos.. see pictures. You must grinding the metal surface from #180 up to #1200 paper, then etch by Nital (a solution of alcohol and nitric acid; proportions 5 to 1) by a few minutes. And show efect

Some will use automatic transmission fluid to preserve meteorites. There might be something better like spray lacquer
or something.

Thanks for the info from both of you , I will do that.

Nothing protects iron except the lack of moisture and the lack of oxygen

Digitman, The quickest and easiest thing I have found to etch your irons with comes from Radio Shack ( if there are any of those around any more) it is circuit board etching solution. Costs 7-8 bucks a bottle. Soak your slices in it for 1-3 minutes, more or less depending on how deep an etch you want. Then rinse it off and soak for 10-15 minutes in methanol which is best or denatured alcohol to displace any moisture then air dry and coat it with ATM fluid or 3 in 1 oil. Some guys I know like the tranny fluid the best. Anyway, the circuit board etchant is much simpler and safer than working with nitric and it works just as quickly.

Gun oil would probably work too. Another option to oiling a gun is to use paste wax.

It looks similar to the Canyon Diablo Graphite nodule type of meteorite sliced. Not 100%, you would need more testing done on it, as I have seen man made old iron that looks the same...
