Hi All,
Found a bit of time to hunt the elementary school across the street, and in the playground I found this 1941 Washington Quarter. I know it was lost recently, no way it's been there that long. Either a clueless parent gave it to a child, or a child took it from a clueless parent. :) Either way I found it. I didn't know that silver could rust though, and this looks pretty well rusted. Can anyone elaborate on this?

I don't think it's rust, sometimes those chips or bark stain the coins. It would come off I'm sure if you rubbed it with something.

silver doesnt rust. what it might be is iron in the soil could have stained it a little.maggot is right about those chips staining coins sometimes as well.

Its either toning or staining of some sort, and the coin appears to have been worn down a bit since it was stained or toned. Probably somebodies lucky pocket piece or something- Silver is always nice! :)

These guys are right..it's just staining. But who cares? IT'S SILVER!!!! Congrats.

Wet it and give it a quick rub with baking soda. The stains will come off.

Nice Coin. Hope I find one that some day. I would go back and see what else you can find. Maybe some jewelry.

Hey just cause it is nice and shiney dont mean it was lost yesterday. It could have been droped in 1942! That is why we all want it and why they dont make coins out of it no more.

Btw, it is just a stain and will easily rub off with some mothers polish. I would try with soap and water first.

A lot of times in the old taverns and bars they would paint or color their quarters so they could keep track of the house money in the juke boxes and what not
