Russy's game piece--BETTER pictures added 6-18-10

went walking w/russy this afternoon
found a couple scrapers and getting ready to leave when i heard russy say
"ya baby!!"
here he had a game piece, (and a pretty good one at that)
it is either pipestone or catlanite
i was thinking about confiscating it from him, what would you do ? (I am not serious, lol)

Re: Russy's game piece

Thats a killer piece!!! yea id want to keep it too but looks like it was a legit find...

Re: Russy's game piece

After the fact it's a little harder to deal with... Trading something else for it is usually a good way to settle these things if it's a piece you really want. (But heck, given your site you could just put in a couple of extra hours and come up with something just as nice!)

All that said, I see nothing wrong with laying down some ground rules if you invite people to hunt on your land. I do it on a couple of sites after another collector found this piece on my site and held me hostage on buying it back from him... The worst part was that he doesn't even collect stone relics, he is a dealer/collector for pre-colombian pottery and I was taking him with me to see a couple of collections that were for sale. It was a 6 hour drive, and this site was along the way so I made the mistake of hitting it while he was with me. He got out of the car and found this piece laying flat out on the path to main area while I was parking.

Re: Russy's game piece

thanks pick,
you are right
i'm glad he saw it cuz i sure didn't
it is pretty shiny now that it's been washed off
i wish i knew what the dubl X signifies ?
lots of the game pieces have that same symbol on them

Re: Russy's game piece

hey joshua thanks
I was only joking about the ownership and confiscation thing
when my friends go with me to the field they always get to keep what they find, and i mean always for the last 25 years
i can't believe that someone would actually sell you something that was picked up from where YOU took them ?
that took a lot of balls,
i would never ever, do that
i bet you didn't take him out hunting anymore
when greed becomes involved in a hunt it would take all the fun away from it in my opinion
i am sorry that you thought i was serious, but you don't know me
i like to share artifacts with friends and don't expect anything in return
some times i will give someone some pieces and they will give me pieces back which is appreciated but not necessary
i always read, and appreciate your posts joshua

Re: Russy's game piece

Awesome Simpson, Joshua.

If you're inclined to let some other folks hunt, I'll offer up myself, a total newbie who has never found anything yet!

The game piece is very interesting too!

Re: Russy's game piece

Hey Lars, I figured you weren't being too serious about the confiscation thing, it just made me think back about that point.

Cthulhu, that's a Fell's Cave point found about 1400 miles South East of Florida. It's a South American paleo type about 500 or so years older than the Simpsons found here in Florida.

Wow, I saw you were in FL, and it looked like a Simpson. That's a wide distribution of similar points. That wasn't in Chile, was it?

Re: Russy's game piece

Nice game piece. The X design is the most common design on game pieces around here.

Do you think those bone sticks (the toothbrush looking ones) that you posted a while back were used in games?

Here are some illustrations (Culin 1907). The dice and basket game was played all over N. America.

larson, thats a fine piece that was found. Most awesome site you have, I would rather find the bone than the stone.
