Hi guys, I was super happy to find this eagle button - don't get too many here in Michigan. So can someone tell me about it? Civil war? I looked on a couple button sites and see similar ones - but this one is a tad different than others I've found. The wings are more "stout" and the talons seem thicker? Maybe there are just variations. Also, there appears to be NO maker mark on the back - unless it's worn off. It was found at a site that dates from the early 1800's. My buddy found a full civil war era spur from about 300 feet from where I found this.

Thanks for your help,
Ian

No eagle button is "run of the mill"! :)

They came in a huge variety of designs by dozens of different makers to include some from overseas.

They sport different wings, heads and necks, different shields and different construction. Many have no backmarks at all... No telling if your button ever saw any "battlefield action" but it is certainly and without question a U.S. Army issued (or individually privately purchased) button.

Here are many that I've dug here in Montana...
