RR Locks

Hello all, Just got done hunting an old RR turntable and found 8 locks (CRR of NJ) one is PR NJ. Im soaking them in soapy water for now but any suggestions will help. Their condition is nice just tryin to get all dirt off thanks.

8 RR locks? Cool Are they brass or iron or both? Did you post pics of them on tnet? Pics might help determine the best way to clean them

Please post a photo of your finds. I would imagine that each lock is at least worth 50 bucks apiece--and your 8 locks may be a banner find as a group.

I'd love to see them.


In terms of cleaning, a rinsing in water will remove the dirt. Some oil on the keyhole cover may make it move again (but the spring mechanism may be rusted solid if it is iron). Some of my friends who've dug locks have said that they want to soak them in oil or liquid wrench and find a key that works. Any key from the same era as your locks, marked with the same railroad line, should open them. Seems that the oil soaking would make for an oily mess, but with 8 locks it might not hurt to experiment with one. Did you find any keys?
