Has anyone dealt with gold filled and RGP jewelry? I keep seeing quite a bit of it pop up at garage sales and I'm tempted but wonder if the tiny bit of gold in those items would sell for scrap? Would a scrap buying place even be interested in that stuff?

I took a chance on a few rings at a buck a piece and haven't gotten them to the scrap guy yet but I ran into more today and was hesitant to invest to much into it.

Thanks,

I would stay away from RGP . Gold Filled cuff bracelets are great sellers. The rest is hit or miss.

I keep any gold filled I find in jewelry lots I buy and if I find a heavy piece for cheap I'll buy it. The refiner I deal with will process it as long as you have 500+ grams. It generally takes me 2-3 years to pick up that much. I sent off my last batch November of last year & have somehow managed to accumulate around 400 grams since. Unfortunately most refiners that accept gold filled also require a business license of some sort.

I was going to answer but you said what I was going to say. Do you use ARA?

Pardon my ignorance, but......what does RGP stand for?

Gold filled or don't waste your time, if scrapping. Gold filled usually sells for close to sterling scrap prices on eBay. Though I haven't checked in a while.

As mentioned, RGP and gold filled pieces are worth buying if they're cheap enough. Some of the better local scrap buying companies in my area will pay for it and as mentioned refineries will process it but the minimum weight is high. Right now clean gold filled is worth more by weight than sterling is.

I almost never find gold at sales in my area, but I pick up a few pieces of gold filled every month. Pickers and dealers often often don't bother with it. Today I picked up 2.7 grams of 10K filled for $1.00 at garage sale at the end of the day.

Don't ever buy anything marked HGE, though. That's just electroplated. It's not worthless, but it takes a lot of it to have any value. Also I found a ring marked 14K TGE recently, and I have not tested it but it looks electroplated as well.

RGP is not really worth buying as scrap in my opinion. It's only about twice the thickness of electroplated items, which isn't saying much. Gold filled items need to be at least 1/20 total weight in gold . If the gold filled item (1/20 12k) is in good condition and the gold isn't worn off, then it's worth around $1 a gram in scrap. goldnscrap goldnscrap.com 2015

Thanks for all the info. The scrap buyer wouldn't take the RGP stuff but luckily I also found a 10k piece to turn in. Profit out the door, $14. Not much I know but still a newbie.

Nothing wrong with that. A profit is a profit. We've all had our small scores and that is part of what keeps us at it. Now that you know what to look for, you'll get that great find at some point in time. Keep searching.
