I found this item in an old park. When it was found it was completely covered in crust and looked nothing like it does now. It has been soaking in olive oil so some of the crust has come off. As you can see it was scraped when it was retrieved. As you can also see there are several circles on it...possibly some of them are holes that are encrusted. The are two bumps on one side that do remind me of a pin back setting but I'm not certain. It measures about 1 3/4" in diameter. I don't know what it is, but I can tell you for sure it is copper. You need to clean it up.

Get a regular stove top pan, crumple up a piece of Al foil to make it shiny, unfold it, place on the bottom of pan, fill with water, add two scoops baking soda, heat to below a boil, and then add the piece. You will need to take it out and clean with soap and water every 15minutes or so. You may need to replace the Al foil as the item will sacrifice it to restore electrons. Keeps us posted...can't wait to see that golden copper shine.

Our Solar system perhaps.
Be gentle with your cleaning.
If it has big value, a bad cleanup might knock that way down.

Good Luck

I would guess a part from a vintage rotary phone...

Agreed. What I described is very gentle. All it does is remove the outer layer of oxidation.

Watch part, probably pocket watch

I had no idea they made watches or pocket watches out of copper.

Probably brass...over time the ground leaches out the tin and leaves the copper on the surface. The scratch reveals the true nature of the metal, brass. Just my opinion, but I have found loads of watch parts almost exactly like this over 30 years of detecting.

Looks like a watch part to me as well.

Sent from a spun out toilet paper tube (one ply)!

As stated above. It is the inside parts of a pocket watch. Check the piece in the lower left corner compared to yours. Pocket watch parts are fairly common finds in parks. Still a great find though. Hang on to it and make a display at some point with others that you find similar to this one. Makes a great wall hanger. Congrats on the find.
