Thanks, Pete. That's another great theory and that was actually my first guess when I held it in my hand fresh from the dirt. After the ideas purported above by creskol and DCMatt, I did some research and it does appear to fit into the mold of a horse bridle rosette. See the pic of the example below. Thanks to you and all for your attention to this object. I will marked this post "Solved."
