I was going through some of my smaller artifacts and came across this one that I really had hoped it was an old button from the 17th or early 18th century, but I just cannot find something similar in Tice's Dating button books. So not sure if it is a button or something else. What concerned me was the rusty "shank", I do not think the early buttons had a shank that would rust like that.....

It is solid, not hollow, it weighs a hefty 9.7 grams! Basically around cuff button size. Including several angled photos of the relic.

It could be something more modern, but just have no idea, wish I knew what it looked like under that hunk of rust!

Agreed, it is not a button, & I get a few of these, some with a longer screw thread, I forgot what they are. Horse or furniture.

It's not a button. Probably from furniture or something like that.

Not sure about it having screw thread, thought more of a flat like shank that rusted, but do agree it could be horse related over furniture. A friend suggested it would be more likely to be used with leather than wood. But we know how horse hardware seems to have a hard time getting positively ID'd here for some reason. :)

I will keep it as a UNK until such time a photo of it can be found with positive ID, just like those things that Buckleboy first wondered about years ago.......

We get quite a few & wondered what they were for years, I have seen much larger iron ends & from memory the thread is beyond the length you have left. I also might be wrong about that because I had an ID on these, saw a whole one, not all that long ago, I just can't place it right now. I think it had some kind of nut on the end. It seems to be a find that comes out looking like yours 99% of the time. But I know you can count button off the list.
