About the size of a quarter (very slightly smaller).

Yeah, definitely not a normal button but I was thinking of some sort of fastener. I could see that raised post in the middle maybe sliding into a hole at the end of a slit in leather. It was found at the site of an old canal that would have used horses to pull the barges so I was originally thinking a decoration on some horse leather but then when I got it cleaned up enough to read the patent date, the canal had been out of use for about 50 years by then.

It's the "male" part of a big snap.

Thanks! The center male part does look identical. Any idea how to date it more precisely or know of any sites that have more information on them? (I googled for a while earlier after I saw your post but didn't find much.)

Hard to say. As you can see, they haven't changed much in the last 100 years.

A snap this size probably came off a knapsack or other personal item. I thought canvas for covering goods at first, but I don't think this type of snap would be strong enough.
