Round brass part of something

I found this in a park that dates back to the mid 1800s. It is 1-1/4 inches in diameter and the round part is 5/32" thick. It is heavy and it seems to be made of brass or bronze. It gave a real nice coin signal and it was a bit disapointing when I got it out of the ground - especially after seeing something round in the hole.

I don't think that it's that old but does anyone recognise it?

I believe this is one side of a "gate" from a gate valve. A threaded stem would go inbetween two of these that would raise or lower the gate to as it was turned, there by opening or closing the valve.
