Hunted "old faithful" (1756 homesite) again yesterday. I've hunted this site regularly over the past two years and I never come away empty handed. This time, I came away with several more small colonial buttons to include this one - silver gilt with really cool sculpted edges.

But my find of the day was another rotary seal matrix. I had found an identical one several months ago, but that one did not have the bezel ring. When I cleaned this one off, I was amazed at the fact that not only was the bezel ring still intact, it actually was still able to rotate and work as designed!

From what I've been able to find from my research, the disk that mounts inside the bezel ring could be metal, or possibly even cut/carved stone; but I was not able to find it. Perhaps on the next hunt!

That is a really cool find! I have never seen one of these posted. Awesome that it still works. I hope you find the seal

Normally a stone, like carnelian & 2-sided. I've yet to get a complete a one as you.

That's a beauty frame. I found a seal matrix once and put it in a pocket that developed a hole. Still can't find it!

That's a beauty

That's a killer find, congrats. Please look for the stone upon your return to the site. That would be the icing on the cake.

Well played sir!

congratulations on the working seal matrix. :occasion14:

its amazing the things that survive so many years underground!

I actually marked the spot so that I can return this coming weekend with a sifter! Who knows, maybe I will get lucky.

https://draytonhall.wordpress.com/2011/08/ Check out this web site , shows almost the exact one. Great find

Great info, and yes, the photo shows an identical seal matrix. I also noted that no actual seal has been recovered, at least not at that site. I read somewhere that it was customary to actually destroy the seal upon the owner's death. That may account for rarity of the actual seal.

Did you see the one that I found in August - it did have the seal - lucky find for sure

Great find-congratulations :occasion14:

I found a partial one earlier this year that is very similar
