Haven't seen soil in months, so I'm digging through my box of finds from last season. Came across this rosette (with a piece of horse hair still stuck in the back) and wanted to know if the lead center is simply decoration or did they put musket balls in rosettes during a certain time period?

Also, is it silver plated?

Thanks in advance.

The piece in the center doesn't look like lead. It looks like brass. So it is probably a part of the rosette. Your rosette is indeed silver plated it appears, and I have a hunch that it is silver-plated Pewter. I have a few rosettes dug over the years, but only one silver plated pewter example.

Cheers,

Rosette or horse boss/harness boss as we say

Had a few of similar construction but never seen the central attachment before, maybe because the plough normally breaks them up :-\
