Neat find! Could be a rosette (as you stated) to a horse bridle.

Does the symbol mean anything to you?

For the age it appears to be mid to late 19th century. It appears to be a rosette or decorative/medal type piece. Kewl find like the design of it.. :occasion14:

It sort of looks like a decorative furniture piece. I don't recall rosettes having a single "screw" mount. I am no expert by any means.

Your find came from a Hepplewhite furniture piece. It's either a hardware knob or a rosette that would be found on a mirror. The urn is so typical of that period. The Hepplewhite period started around 1810, so your furniture rosette is an old one! The 'urns' decor was also used during the Queen Anne period, but is most associated with Hepplewhite. Here's a website showing the Hepplewhite urn on hardware.

To answer your statement, rosettes do come with single studs, both threaded and screw type...

I have silver 6 screw-type rosettes on my saddle...

Also have an unmounted pair of silver rosettes I picked up in Mexico maybe 30 years ago...came across the stash a few months back...
