Hello everyone. I got out yesterday to a spot me & my buds have hit numerous times. However, this time I did a little exploring in the woods. The owner owns hundreds of acres so I figured it was worth a shot. I did locate a couple new sites but I didn't stay too long. I also checked out some recently cleared land & came up empty handed. My favorite find is the rosette. This came from a creek bank on new land I was exploring. I'm thinking its colonial but would like to know what you think. I didn't get any response in the what is it forum... It was silver gilt with a little remaining. I would also like to know about the Ford item. Radiator cap? Also is there any way to determine the model it's from? Any insight would be great. I also found a couple of compacts & a flat button. I was ending the day & figured I'd swing through the yard for the heck of it on the way back to the car. To my surprise I got a good signal & popped out this merc. This yard has been pounded so it was a nice surprise & great to end the day with a silver. I can't wait for Thanksgiving, I'll have 4 full days of hunting! Oh, I also posted a pic of a display case I gave the owner. It's good to share especially when the owners family built the house. He was very happy to get it. It's actually the second I've made for him. Thanks for looking & HH!

Great finds, love the display case, the lock face is awesome! HH!

Thanks. I used the ACV & Evaporust treatment on the lock, it came out good. Wasn't easy to hand over but its in good hands.

Mangum,
Great job on that display case. Looks awesome.
Not sure about that rosette? :dontknow: For some reason I think that Ford piece is wheel related. :icon_scratch:
Nice recoveries,
MM

Josh - I'm intrigued by that item you're calling a rosette. I can't see any sign of an attachment for a button, rosette, or anything of that nature so not sure that's what you have. It doesn't appear to be a coin or token either so I'm stumped. I did notice the design around the periphery has 13 sections which may have some significance (13 colonies?). Hope someone can come up with an ID for that piece. Nice find!

Bill,

It's kind of hard to tell from the photos but on the left side there is some sort of corrosion where it appears that something was attached (see photo). It is not as evident on the right side but there is an area where it appears something was attached. That's why I was thinking rosette. Interesting you brought up the 13 sections. It appears to be a Greek key design so I doubt it has any significance. I was actually hoping to locate a British camp! Cornwallis was in the area for 3 days in the area I'm searching. Hopefully someone will have some input.Screen Shot 2013-11-25 at 10.37.24 AM.png

If you're seeing attachment points it has to be some sort of rosette. And like you said, the design was probably only for decorative purposes. Still be nice to date it.

Real nice finds, Mangum-and nice display for the landowner . What is the supposed Rosette made out of? It looks
pretty solid and substantial. Anyway, good job!

Thanks. It's brass or copper that was silver gilt. It's hard for me to tell unless it's scratched.

Erving posted an exact item that he found in a colonial cellar hole he was trying to ID as well in my post in what is it. No sign of a shank on his either. He is in Massachusetts. At least this helps me somewhat date it as he found it at a colonial site. I've attached his example below:
