Rosa Americana Half Penny?

UPDATE: 1655-1658 French Liard coin!

****UPDATE:Thank you Iron Patch for the awesome ID on this coin. It turns out this is a French Liard coin, and based on the Crowned Bust it dates from 1655-1658


I found this while detecting this past weekend. This site has produced 5-6 KGI's a 1699 KW, 3 or so KG II's and many other period relics. This one I think is a Rosa American Half Penny, what do you all think?

It is the correct size, and appears to have a bust facing right. It is SUPER worn, almost slick. I cannot make anything out on the back.

Definitely facing to the right, and the nose line looks pretty darn close to me. But then again, I found a similar "slick" copper a couple of weeks ago and every time I pick it up I see something different, so I am not to be trusted.

It's going to be mid. 1600s. Off the top of my head I'm pretty sure they stopped making them like that in the 1650s. There's still a similar coin at the turn of the century, but the bust is different. Given what you found at your site it's not a surprise one of these turned up.

Yep, he is the ID king, pretty much, if there has any mis ID's , or proved wrong without a doubt, this would be a good place to post, but you'll search long and hard.......to find a mistake, if any. I have been here 9 years.....

IP is awesome, some don't like him, they don't like the truth...usually. Yeah I "kind of" know him, but he treats me the same as anyone else, with objective and accurate ID's. Only thing is some "can't handle the truth" some can.

I'll be honest I can't ID it, but the nose seems too far from the edge to be a ROSA ?

I love to hate him!We go at it often it's fun..He does put lots of people in their place!

Nice Copper. I think IP is right. I have dug one that looks almost identical to yours. It is slick on the Liard de France side and the front looks worn just like yours. Barely enough details to get an ID.
As soon as i saw the pic i thought French Liard.

Hrmm, that would be interesting if it was from the mid 1600's. I'm going to keep digging around to see if I can't firm up the date range.

One observation I have made is, that it looks like the later Liards did not have a crown on top of the kings head, but the 1600's versions do have a crown. I definitely see the tip of the crown on my coin. Does anyone have some sort of reference guide to the versions of the liard as it moved from the 1650's to the early 1700's? I saw a 1694 without a crown while google searching.

Ok, I know I'm replying to myself, but IronPatch, again, right on the money with your specific time frame. I was finally able to find a site that appears to detail the variations of the Liard from 1643 - 1715. It appears there is only one variation that contains a Crowned Bust on the reverse, and that was first issued in 1655 and last issued on 1658. VERY SWEET.

This is the second time you have ID's a French coin I have come across. You did me the favor of ID'ing my oldest coin to date, a 1639 French Double Tournois a few years back. Much gratitude!

Where you confused yourself a little is 1643-1715 was his reign, very little to do with when specific coins were issued other than being within that time frame. I'll check tomorrow but it is a fairly narrow window of years they made these... but definitely mid. 1600s. The no crown busts didn't happen until like 1690... and will confirm that tomorrow too.
