Excelent project, sensibly funded Archeology

No Funds = No Information.

Sell Surplus to fund excavation and conservation = Lots of information put into the Public Domain.

When will the Academic Archeologist accept the realities of life

Interesting story with two totally different versions of the same event. I guess you have to choose which report to believe about the amount of archaeological work that was done during the course of the recovery. I suspect that the salvager's version is probably nearer to the truth. There is no reason why a full and proper archaeological program could not be financed out of the profits of such a rich wreck, and maybe it was in this case. However, when it comes, for example, to the decision of whether to recover, conserve and examine the remains of the hull, which would come into the category of desirable but not necessary in my opinion, then the archaeologists wanting to go that extra mile should come up with the funding to do it. Perhaps that kind of additional work could be funded out of the Dutch government's 25% share of the artifacts.
