I don't think it's a roofing nail. Is that gold gilt I'm seeing on it. If so try aluminum jelly to clean it. You will see alot more detail after cleaning. There's also detail on the shank. I'm very curious as to what this is. :dontknow:

There is a gold gilt, but not sure if I can get aluminum jelly. Any substitutes? I have mineral oil, peroxide, lemon, soap. :dontknow:

I'm not sure about any of those combinations. Aluminum jelly is the best. You can get aluminum jelly at your local hardware store. I think Ace Hardware has it. My local hardware store ordered it for me. Please invest in some al. jelly. All metal detectorists should have some. It will make a relic with gold gilt shine like new money. There's no rush to clean this item. Go find some al. jelly. It's made by Henkle Loctite. :icon_sunny:

Good eye RPG. Besides looking possibly gilded, it also looks like it might possibly be pewter. Garibaldi, does it cling to your magnet?

I agree, pewter gilded cufflink :icon_thumright: Could it be the 1600's?

You think this artifact could be a cufflink from 1600's? Wow if true that would be awesome. I was going to toss it. :o

I know little about cufflinks, but noticed a pair of pewter cufflinks found at a 1600's site. Not sure how long it was practised to gild pewter cufflinks :dontknow:

I don't think cufflink nor 1600's either. Early cufflinks had a "link" between the two pieces (hence the name). Back in the 1600's they were called "sleeve buttons".

Later cufflinks had a solid stem between the buttons. But it is/was typically curved. This item looks straight. If it is gilded, it is must be some type of jewelry or clothing accessory. Still thinking about it...

DCMatt is correct. The early cuff buttons were linked together as he has shown. Could it be some type of horse tack; perhaps for a saddle. Breezie

I do not think it is a roofing nail. When it is cleaned, we can have a better idea as to what it could be.
