Evenin' All,
Could this be my second Roman coin?
Looks and feels like a Sestertius to me - probably of 'Septimius Severus' -
Most of the detail has been worn off over the years but an almost angelic figure can be made out - (or animal-like depending on the angle)
Anyone recognise the coin -

Thanks.

Roman Sestertius - well done, but a full id would be near on impossible. It will fall into the 1st-2nd century bracket though.

Very nice. I see your finds improving with every post.

That Lobo seems to be doing good things for you. I think we will be seeing some great finds in the future.

Good luck
Randy

If the Museum Lady can give a full ID on that one, I want her email.

lol...

Well, she'll be able to identify it as Roman and probably 1st or 2nd century. But also, some details just show better in person, rather then a pic, no matter how good the pic is.

I'm always amazed at how spot on they are with hard to attribute coins at the ancient coin forum

I don't know how you can say great ID :icon_scratch: without any of the legend visible :icon_scratch: it could be a number of Emperors, as I said earlier it's a Laurette head bust of :dontknow:

Nah - its none of these.
You can clearly see 'Winged Victory' on the left-hand side with arms out-stretched to the right -

You are missing the point, I was pointing out that the coin could be any of these emperors, the coins I posted were just a refrence to the laurette head bust , nothing to do with the reverce. And I can't see Winged Victory on your coin, but then you have the coin in front of you, but if you want Winged Victory on another.....I'm not trying to be clever or anything, it's just without the legend you just can't tell.

I based my comment on the reverse side of the coin. Postion of arms and the wings appear to be a match. Have never dug a Roman coin and don't know much about them. If it isn't match I stand corrected.

IS...I am not saying defanetly it's not that coin, just that there are a number of rulers that have coins depicting Victory on the reverce, here's another

I did find a lead bale seal when I detected in Italy (couldn't id any markings :D). I can see the difficulty in ID'ing Roman coins (this ID does appear very close). Love the way you Brits will say: "go find a better one" :icon_thumright:

No what you meen, Id any coin here can be a night mare :icon_scratch: there are so many different variations, on Roman and hammered, I almost never give a full ID, just the basic. like King, and Mint

No - not missing the point - It could have been any of those emperors you mention if it wasn't for the position and posture of 'Victory' (and both arms) - It will be the reverse (or whats left of it) that will give it a positive ID - Very different to all the examples you've shown so far - yes, I know it helps to have the coin in the hand.

Here's a better view:

I'll let you know result from Museum - could take a month though!
Best wishes.

I to was trying to make SS's point that without a few letters, an ID on image along is a shot in the dark. Weigh & size will help a little, but best of luck. Just be happy its Roman & aim to get a better one. We have 100s of ones we never IDed.
