Lovely warm day with the sun warming us in the evening, no gloves & coats needed.:metaldetector:

Spent 5.5 hours gridding on from last week, we now have covered nearly 60% of the whole site.

My second dig after the iron nail was the Siliqua of Julian II AD363.:headbang: This time it was the kiss of death & ended up the best of the day. Not that it matters when I get it.:laughing7:

36 Scrappies (good total)
Small frag of Roman Bracelet
1/2 Medieval Buckle
Handmade brass nail with a 'P' (not seen this before):icon_scratch:
Tudor Thimble
:coffee2:

Great finds! That nail is interesting

pennyweight nail?

Wow. I always come to see your post first cause I know you have found treasure :thumbsup: . Seems like the "P" would be flattened if drove. Be interested to see what you learn. As always nice coin.

Outstanding finds!
Thinkin the nail is from a horseshoe? Did they shoe horses back then?

Gun Parts
I think its 18th-19th C, maybe used on a gun to hold the wrist plate? Or a Truck Nail?
No idea really!

Great looking stuff..:)

You got a real beauty! Bad thing is that every time a hunt starts that good you are disappointed when the other finds arn't quite as good... But with 36 more romans popping up...

We know it will go either 1 of 2 ways with a start like that;
A) It will be the only great find all day
or
B) They don't stop coming
(seems to be no halfway house).
Most of us know that 'B' is a much rarer event, that's why the last hunt on this land was a banner hunt in our eyes;
a day when we get a Saxon Silver & a Roman Silver each may never happen again.
Therefore there is no disappointment, just the reality of detecting.

It's OK, we did expect this kind of result (20 bronze maybe 1 roman silver) - 36 way over the odds. You can't expect Saxon Sceats everytime, over the years the total off this field is now 6. Which is by far our best field. We are now on 16 Roman Silver & about 650 Roman Bronze, making it our best Roman Silver Field & our 2nd best Bronze!

The good news is that as you say, it's a good one for the album. (unlike the other 2 last week)

Great day of hunting both weather-wise and find-wise. Love that silver coin. Must be an awesome feeling to dig something that old.

Hi Crusader, very nice finds! Congratulations! What kind of signals do you dig at a site like this? All or just the remarkable ones? Having a huge Site with ernormous potential myself right now but only have a few weeks till the whole area will be resown. Not sure what to dig and what not. Found numerous great Things that were made from Iron so i am hardly getting a few steps without digging. And its like 25 hektar or so. Kinda overwhelms me. bye GA

The below assumes that you systematically grid a site leaving no gaps.
Well its hard to tell you the answer as it varies from site to site. At the moment we dig nearly every signal including iron nails. However, when we started this site 6 or so years ago it was a different matter. As the years go on we get less and less fussy.
As you kind of point out, you need to cover the area as quickly as possible. More area=more finds. It would take us both about 20 days (5 hours a day) to do 25 Hektars. Therefore you would need 40 days, & that is too much time on 1 field.

nice Siliqua ..... :thumbsup: is difficult to find in my country ... easier are the denarii.

That is a beautiful Roman silver!

Its a nice coin, I love it. It was lucky I saved it before another plough hit, as the crack is pretty bad.
