HI Burdie, you can compare these ancient brooches (fibulas) to the modern safety pins, they worked the same way and were used instead of buttons which were not used for this purpose.
Here in Germany, there's enough specialised literature on this topic.

Thank you Birdman, what about our joint hunting? The harvest is over, so most fields are available for us.
 

Maybe this weekend? I would have to leave about 1100 am to get back home but I could be there around 700. It is only :) about 45 minutes I think.
 

Great find - the mind boggles thinking about whats still lying in the ground and is yet to be found.
