Went back to the potatoe field i detected thursday. There was only one row harvested and hoped the farmer did more but had no luck... Did the one row again with no success. Switched over to a tractor track 10 metres away and started pulling lead. Great sign, but again, not more. I did one track 50 metres down into the field and the other track back. I pulled a piece i thought it was lead again and stuffed it into the pouch. Managed a thimble close to the truck and went home. When cleaning everything up the piece of lead turned into a beautiful roman lion mount. Here is one sold in an auction: http://www.hermann-historica-archiv...=NR_LOT&c=1814&t=temartic_A_GB&db=kat61_a.txt

Thanks CMD, these .50s are everywhere, this time there was a silver tipped one present. We dig armor piercing, tracer, blue tipped incindiary by the dozend, but rarely the silver tip ap/incindiary. I live in the flight corridor the bombers used on their raids to the Ruhrgebiet. Air battles almost every day plus the low level attacks winter 44/45.... German pulltabs...

Made a cleaned up pic of the Lions Head:

What,no sliver Lu? Very nice find. What would that have been on? Wishing you luck.

Hi Tim! No silver this time. It will come again soon! This time i'm happy with the lion head. It was probably on a chest or box of some kind. Crusader helped with ID.

I love finding historical artifacts, historical things with a story; whether it be metal detecting or searching through old rooms at the farmhouse. I would be a happy man if I lived in Great Britain and all I did was metal detect and did archeological digs throughout Europe. My family is from Germany (Kott), Scotland (McNally), and England (Brewster, Osborn, Frost) mainly.
You live in a awesome place to dig history! Great finds and God bless your endeavors to be the best at what you do.

nice find! gz!

Thanks all, i cant wait to get back to this site in a couple weeks. I knew the roman site in the next field well but didn't know that it expands over the complete hill. Hopefully more will show up there!
