I detected a few Roman coins on Sunday, most of which are still soaking, but this one came out of the ground in great condition and just needed a slight rinse. It appears to be made from billon (an alloy of copper or bronze and silver) and is 19 mm in diameter. I keep thinking I have it id'd and then something else in my coin books looks a more likely candidate :dontknow:, what do you think. Maybe Cru or SS will know :laughing7:.

Neat coin. :icon_thumleft: How cool to be able to find a coin that old. Any idea what the dagger looking things over the head are and what they stand for?

Hi Gary, the dagger looking things over the head are in fact a crown. The spokes or daggers are meant to represent the rays of the sun. This type of obverse is mostly called a "radiate" or "barbarous radiate" because of the crowns rays. I have just recieved an email from the UKDFD with a partial id of Victorinus, but I need to send better pics in tomorrow for a full id. Date range is Summer 269 ad to Autumn 271 ad.

Nice coin and to think that it came out like that, and yet another 12cm away can be decimated.
What would have been the value "Back in the Day"?
A penny, dollar, pound?

Cheers

That was an easy one, I was sleeping :laughing9:

'barbarous radiate' are only locally produced imitations, not this one :icon_thumright:

We all need to hit the sack early every now and then :laughing7:, I was really pleased with this coin, it only needed a quick rinse to clean it up, unlike the bronze ones ;D
